Social Coin Casino Model: Why Gold and Sweeps Split
Gold Coins never cash out, Sweeps Coins need up to 20 plays and a 100 SC minimum. How the two-coin model works and why NY and Florida reject it.

A social coin casino runs on two currencies. Gold Coins are sold for play and cannot be redeemed for prizes. Sweeps Coins are handed out free, usually as a bonus on Gold Coin packs, and can be redeemed only after a playthrough and above a minimum balance.
The finding that matters is how much room the operators leave themselves inside that model, and how state attorneys general now read it. Both are on the record in the operators' rules and in 2026 enforcement filings.
How the two-coin model works
Every purchase buys Gold Coins. Sweeps Coins ride along as a promotional extra, and only they carry a path to a prize.
Regal Coins' sweeps rules, version 2.1.3 updated September 2026, say a player can receive Sweeps Coins as a free bonus when buying Gold Coins. Gains.com is more explicit: any purchase of Gold Coins is a purchase of Gold Coins only, and Sweeps Coins cannot be purchased under any circumstances and have no monetary value under its rules.
| Feature | Gold Coins | Sweeps Coins |
|---|---|---|
| How a player gets them | Purchase, or free promotions | Free bonus with Gold Coin packs, free routes such as mail-in |
| Can they be bought | Yes | No, per operator rules |
| Redeemable for prizes | Never | Yes, after playthrough and above the minimum |
| Legal role | Product sold for entertainment | Sweepstakes entry |
Regal Coins also states that only games played with Sweeps Coins give the chance to redeem winnings for real prizes. Gold Coin wins stay inside the game.
Playthrough: one play, or up to 20
The default rule is that a Sweeps Coin must be played once before it is eligible for redemption. Both operators reserve the right to raise that, and the ceiling is 20 plays.
Gains.com says coins must be played at least once before redemption. Regal Coins adds that it may, at its sole discretion, require coins to be played a greater number of times, not exceeding 20, in any combination of Sweeps Coins games. The same clause appears in both rule sets.
Redemption minimums and the mail-in route
Regal Coins redeems only from 100 Sweeps Coins. Its rules state a redemption is processed only when the prize is worth US$100 or more, as of September 2026.
The free route is the other half of the sweepstakes claim: a way to get Sweeps Coins without buying anything. At Regal Coins that route runs through postal requests, and each Postal Request Code expires after 90 days from when it is displayed. Each code is single-use, so a lapsed one is simply gone.
Where the model is not offered
The operators do not claim the structure works everywhere. Gains.com sorts states into tiers in its own rules: California, Indiana and New York are Merchandise Territories under Gains.com rules, while Connecticut, Louisiana, Maine, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey and Tennessee are Gold Coin Territories, where only Gold Coins play. How regulators read Sweeps Coins
State attorneys general reject the premise that Sweeps Coins are free.
In New York, the Attorney General's office said its investigation found players got sweeps coins the way one might purchase chips, at roughly one coin per dollar spent. VGW agreed to pay $8 million in disgorgement, penalties and costs in a settlement announced in September 2026. The office's position is that New York law prohibits online gambling involving redeemable virtual coins.
Florida's Attorney General filed complaints in Hillsborough County Circuit Court on 19 August 2026. The filings call Sweeps Coins redeemable wagering credits that can be cashed out for cryptocurrency, gift cards or cash after minimal play-through.
| Point | Operator rules | Regulator reading |
|---|---|---|
| Are Sweeps Coins bought | No, a free bonus | Bought at about one per dollar (NY) |
| What a Sweeps Coin is | Sweepstakes entry, no monetary value | Redeemable wagering credit (FL) |
| Legal status | Outside gambling law | Illegal online gambling (NY, FL) |
The gap between the two columns is the whole fight. The coins have not changed. The argument over what a Gold Coin pack actually buys has.
Intel Q&A
Are social coin casinos legal in the US?
It depends on the state and on whether regulators accept the free-entry structure. New York's Attorney General says state law prohibits online gambling that involves redeemable virtual coins, and Florida's Attorney General sued operators in August 2026. Operators themselves exclude some states from prize play.
Can you buy Sweeps Coins?
Not under the operators' own rules. Gains.com states that Sweeps Coins cannot be purchased and have no monetary value; they arrive as a free bonus with Gold Coin packs or through free routes such as mail-in requests.
What is the minimum to redeem Sweeps Coins?
Regal Coins processes a prize redemption only at a value of US$100 or more, which equals 100 eligible Sweeps Coins, as of its September 2026 rules. Coins must also clear the playthrough first.
What is the difference between Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins?
Gold Coins are for social play and can never be redeemed. Sweeps Coins are the promotional entries: only games played with them can produce winnings that are redeemable for prizes.
