Megaways originated with BTG in 2015 and became a licensed mechanic that Pragmatic Play and others began implementing across their portfolios. The core idea is simple: each reel has a variable height that changes with each spin. A reel might display three symbols one spin and four symbols the next. The total number of winning combinations multiplies accordingly.

A game with three reels at four symbols each offers 64 combinations. A Megaways game with the same reels varying from two to six symbols offers up to 7,776 combinations on certain spins. This mechanical complexity creates the appearance of volatility-dampening. More ways to win should mean more frequent wins, therefore lower variance. The marketing emphasizes this consistently.

Consider two games with identical RTP of 96 percent. Game A has 20 ways to win. Game B has 100,000 ways to win. If Game B has more ways but the same RTP, it must have lower average win sizes across those ways. The distribution of payoff must compress. As of 2024, a player comparing RTPs on paper should expect that a Megaways game with published 96 percent RTP will pay out slightly less effectively (around 95.2 percent) than a traditional slot with the same published RTP.
